The Library

A library was an essential accessory for the Victorian landed gentry and was stocked with volumes chosen to show off the owner’s education and interests.

In 1999 the library was recreated from photographs, matching the original 19th century panelling with a mixture of modern reproductions and furniture from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. On display are a Victorian edition of the Ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead, and an impressive 17th century edition of the historian John Fox’s Book of Martyrs. The book rests open on the pages relating to George Marsh, and includes illustrations, documentations of Marsh’s trial and some of his personal journals and letters.
