Children and Young People

Books for children

Children of any age can join the library.  It's free and we've got lots to read:

  • Large print

  • Dual language books (the same story in English and another language)

  • Audio books

  • First steps (books for new readers)

  • Non-fiction (for school topics)

  • Junior fiction (for fun!)

You can find all of these using the library catalogue, or by asking at your local library.

Books for Young People

Each library has a collection of books both fiction and non-fiction, aimed at young people aged 11-16.

Homework

All of our libraries have books on popular school topics for you to borrow.  We've also got electronic reference books, like a special children's version of the Encyclopaedia Britannica which you can use on the library computers or on your own computer at home.

If you're at secondary school, you might find some of the books in the adult section useful.  You can borrow these with your Young Adult card.

Most of our libraries have areas which can be used for quiet study so you’re welcome to come and do your homework or assignments.

Online resources for Children and Young People

Are you stuck with your homework?

Doing a school project?

Looking to impress your teachers with your amazing knowledge?

Bolton Libraries have lots of online resources which can help you.

Access the online information resources either from home or from one of our libraries, see the Online Resources page for more online sources.

Computers

All of our libraries have filtered internet access for children: if your parents say it's OK, you can use our computers for up to an hour a day for free.  We can help you find sites suitable for homework.

Under-5s

Our libraries have lots for under-5s.  Your youngsters might like to borrow a board book or a picture book.

We've also got regular activities like Bookstart Toddler Tales, for parents and young children to take part in, along with special events during the year.

Bookstart

Bookstart is a national scheme that encourages all parents and carers to enjoy books with children from as early an age as possible, to help every child in the UK develop a lifelong love of books. There are two packs of books to collect for every baby and toddler aged 0-4 years old. Baby packs are distributed at Bolton’s Health Centres at the 8 month stage at health checks. Treasure Bags for 3-4 year olds are given out at nursery.

Join us in June each year to celebrate National Bookstart Week. Each library holds events with nursery rhymes and activities for children under 4. Please contact your local library direct for further details.

Bookstart Toddler Tales

All of our libraries have regular story and rhyme sessions.  Toddler Tales is a fun, free activity for you and your youngsters.  You'll be guaranteed a warm welcome, so ask the staff at your local library for details!
