Reconstructed Bag Tunic

  • West Bank New Kingdom
  • Dynasty 19-21 (1295-945 BC)
  • Linen, 1155 x 370 x 1mm
  • BOLMG:1930.69.3.3

This ancient strip of fine linen is mounted on a modern replica bag tunic. It features finished edges on the opening for the neck and a fringe on the bottom.

The Egyptians often made the linen strips they used to wrap mummies from old worn clothing that belonged to the deceased.

The original bag tunic possibly dates to Dynasty 19 and the original wrapping of the mummy. Alternatively, if the mummy was re-wrapped when it was placed in the Chantress of Amun Tayuhenet’s coffin, it dates to Dynasty 21.
