Bolton Museum houses a fine art collection of over 3500 items. Nearly all of these are works by British artists dating from the 18th century to the present day.

There are about 60,000 specimens in the botanical collection. Most of these are herbarium specimens which are either pressed, dried and mounted on to sheets of paper or are dried and stored in packets.

Bolton Museum is fortunate to have a conservator to care for the Museum's objects. The conservator does not carry out practical work on any objects other than those belonging to the museum.

Insects are very successful organisms, with about 1.5 million named species and probably several million more that have yet to be named.

Bolton Museum houses a small but significant collection of items that date primarily from the 19th and early 20th Century that were collected by local people as they worked or travelled in remote areas of the world.
